Grand Re-Opening Celebration!

The Twelve Foot Davis Gravesite has been re-vitalized through a partnership among the Government of Alberta, the County of Northern Sunrise, and the Town of Peace River. The intent of the revitalization is to provide improved recreational, educational and tourism opportunities for visitors and residents to the site.

Many changes have happened in the past few months up on the hill – new picnic benches, interpretive panels, additional parking, pathways and landscaping,  as well as a new road approaching from the northeast.  A highlight is the re-installation of the original gravesite headstone for Henry Fuller Davis, commonly known as Twelve Foot Davis.  Mat Bergeron of Northern Sunrise County took on the role of on-site Project Management, with support from the Town of Peace River.

The Twelve Foot Davis Gravesite has long been a destination for local people and tourists because of its history and panoramic view of the Peace River valley. In 2000 it became part of Greene Valley Provincial Park which protects the Heart River valley.

Together with the Town and County and the Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre, GeoTourism Canada is working to awareness of the changes and increase usage of this amazing lookout over the Peace River Valley to ensure that the rejuvenated site is utilized to its full potential.

  • Goal #1: Increase awareness of the new features and improved facilities.
  • Goal #2: Increase visitation/usage of Twelve Foot for both tourists and community members.
  • Goal #3: Increase public awareness of the history of the immediate area and the significance of Twelve Foot Davis.

Where is the Gravesite?

The Twelve Foot Davis Gravesite is on the East Hill of the Peace River Valley, overlooking the convergence of the Smoky, Heart & Peace Rivers, the town site and George Hill (West Hill).

Access the site from the town via this route: [Map coming shortly]

**Please note: this road is extremely narrow and has many tight turns and blind corners. Due to environmental conditions, this road may be closed.

Access is also available from the top of the east hill (from Highway 2). This road has recently been improved, and will be paved in the near future.

The site is within 50 kilometres of many vibrant communities, including Peace River, Grimshaw, Nampa, Berwyn, Dixonville and St. Isidore.
