Paddle The Peace - June 20, 2010

GeoTourism Canada is proud to report that the first Paddle the Peace event was a huge success!

Our partnership with the County of Northern Lights, Northern Sunrise County, the Town of Peace River, Lac Cardinal Country and Smoky River Regional Economic Development and Tourism made the even possible – a HUGE thank you to these municipalities for asking us to be involved!

On Sunday, June 20th, over 100 paddlers launched their canoes and kayaks into the Peace River. The day was filled with singing and splashing – the weather was perfect and everyone was in high spirits for the trek from Strong Creek Park to Riverfront Park, where they stopped for lunch before continuing on to the DMI Bridge. The paddle took about 4-5 hours, not including the lunch break. A shuttle bus was sponsored by Shell to transport paddlers from their vehicles to the launch site, and back to their vehicles again.

GeoTourism Canada, on behalf of the Paddle the Peace organizers, would like to send out a grateful thank you to:

  • Shell, for providing the air-conditioned bus
  • Northern Lakes College, for the 10-person war canoe;
  • Emergency Medical Services (Northern Sunrise County), for their participation;
  • Flow North Paddling, for the providing boat and trailer rentals, expert advice, and amazing extra efforts;
  • Northbase Ranch
  • Survival Adventures
  • Peace Island Tours
  • Record Gazette (it was great to have the media out on the water with us!)
  • Mile Zero News
  • YL Country Radio and the YL Country Summer Fun Cruiser
